What is autonomy and how does it apply in healthcare administration?

Autonomy relates to the freedom to act according to one’s own will. It pertains self-rules or self-governance. An example of autonomy would be when a doctor allows a patient to make health decisions based on their own ideas, values and beliefs. It allows patients to decide if they want westernized medication or more holistic natural treatments

What is HIPAA and why was it enacted?

HIPAA is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act that was passed by Congress in 1996.  HIPAA does the following:

  • Provides the ability to transfer and continue health insurance coverage for millions of American workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs;
  • Reduces health care fraud and abuse;
  • Mandates industry-wide standards for health care information on electronic billing and other processes; and
  • Requires the protection and confidential handling of protected health information

What is the purpose of PHR?

A personal health record, or PHR, is an electronic application through which patients can maintain and manage their health information (and that of others for whom they are authorized) in a private, secure, and confidential environment.

What is General Semantics?

General Semantics are a system of linguistic philosophy developed by Alfred Korzybski (1879–1950), which looks at the subjective nature of words and symbols and tries to improve ways of using language

What is the process of abstraction or the abstraction process?

Abstraction process is something that Korzybski talks about within general semantics. He believes people tend to leave out specific information through the abstraction process. It is the confirmation and recognition of common features. One can abstract ideas from their head about specific details of a workflow.

Event: Something Happens

Object: You sense what happens

Description: Recognize what happens

Inferences: Create meanings for what happens

In DSRP, what is a perspective? Use the abstraction process to provide your example.

In DSRP, the perspective is the point of view. An example is teaching syles. Some students may hate a professors teaching style others love and excel with that same professors teaching style. Depends on how you perceive the professors teaching style.

Fear/anxiety

Differing opinions

Professor options that semester

Using the process of abstraction within general semantics, provide an example from the perspective of healthcare administrator.

  • New Boss
  • Unknown possible changes
  • Fear- change, more and/or different job responsibilities
  • Excitement- upgraged and new healthcare systems and process. New ideas
