What is the sender, receiver, feedback model and how does it apply to you?
This model represents how communication breaks down based on the different avenues it needs to go through such as the people it is to reach and the medium which can be via phone, in-person, mail or email. It applies to me in that every type of interaction involves communication and whether it is effective depends on the factors that make up the communication path. Whatever I communicate and how I communicate it will be received in a certain way on the other end. Therefore communication involves impact.
What are examples of barriers to communication in health care?
The Curse of knowledge is huge in my experience when the communicator thinks the listener will automatically understand what they mean and assuming they have every piece of information they need to make this happen. This can be seen when physicians communicate something to nurses or their own patients and there is some information that keeps them from fully understanding or receiving the message thoroughly.
Barriers:
Negative or ambiguous relationships- people respond better to feeling heard. Face time is important despite the convenience of social media and technology. More of a connection happens
Poor credibility
Conflicting belief systems
Conflicting interests
Communication mismatches
When conducting a stakeholder analysis — or just simply thinking about your stakeholders’ interests in a systematic way — what are three important questions to ask? How do you see these questions being asked in health care? And who are the stakeholders?
- Why might it be in the other party’s/ person’s interest to support me and my ideas?
- What do other parties want that I can give to them to gain their support?
- Why might the other parties say no to me?
Hospital stakeholders- patients, doctors, nurses, all professions within, administrators, families, technology vendors, equipment vendors
I can see a hospital or smaller clinic administrator asking donors how they would benefit from contributing to the sustainability of the place. The success of the facility would be in their best interest. It can lead to increased advancement of equipment and resources.
To gain their support, we can provide large scale recognition of their contributions and add to their rapport. The administrator can give assurance and instill procedures to bring in the best doctors, employees for quality service. They may say no to supporting the institution due to lack of performance, low ratings by patients, high turnover.
Create a stakeholder map for a health care organization and describe it — similar to the map on p. 173 of your textbook.

Describe what a social network is. Use this class as an example. Then create a social network for this class — similar to the one on p. 178 of your textbook.
A social network is the connection between people and the bigger environment they are in for work or as their home. Information can be spread and goals can be reached as they are able to connect with each other.
This class is an example of a social network as we are able to share our ideas and leave comments for each other even though some of us reside on the other coast!

Describe what the different communication networks are and provide examples of them.Is strategic communication or leadership simply just manipulation? Define the three:
strategic communication– mass communication with the goal of persuading and informing (example: advertising with target audience, social media algorithms that customize ads for us)
leadership– a way of communicating that motivates the audience being communicated to. This involves finding a common ground, common goal and displaying traits of great communication, vulnerability that makes you human before your team, providing the support they need to carry out the goal)
manipulation—skillful control of someone or something. (can be deceptive such as a salesman who does not disclose hidden fees, lying to get someone to do something)
Strategic communication not leadership is not manipulation because neither necessarily includes deceptive tactics. Manipulation contains the negative connotation of compelling someone to do something for your own benefit.
What is TRIZ and how can you use the tools discussed in this presentation?
TRIZ is the theory of inventive problem solving, which occurs through thorough research via various methods to gain information through different angles that ultimately lead to solving problem. It is also described as a summary in a way of what has been previously discovered through research and academia.
The tools discussed in the presentation have an end goal of helping the individual and a group think conceptually about things.
I think about it as taking a step back to scope everything at hand and make informed decisions accordingly by building on this information.
What is conceptual thinking? And what is the difference between an idea and a concept?
Conceptual thinking prevents us from getting stuck in the little or unnecessary details that keep us from seeing the essence or the important information to reach the goal.
A concept is a general more abstract thing that allows for a foundation of understanding. An idea then is more proactive or practical which allows to put the concept into practice.
What are the components of a function analysis and a function map?
Function analysis helps us see relationship between subject, action, object. It helps understand the system being analyzed.
Function maps help us understand the relationships via a diagram showing the different components.
Subject – a thing performing something
Action – performed or done to something else
Object- another thing
