What is autonomy and how does it apply in healthcare administration?

Autonomy: Free Will should come to mind. The individual, organization, institution, or entity is free from all limitations or control from others.  This also means that they should be able to understand and have access to information needed upon making an informed and meaningful decision.

With in healthcare if an individual, (physician, institute) has autonomy then they realize and respect the rights of others to make choices based on personal values, beliefs, and morals.  Disrespect for autonomy could also be seen as disrespectful actions, attitudes, or behaviors that would demean, insult or lack attention to autonomous rights of others.

What is HIPAA and why was it enacted?

In Short: HIPAA was inacted to combat waste, fraud and abuse in health care.  HIPAA gives “covered entities” or disclosure of personal health information to need-to-know basis such as health plans, health care providers, and health care clearinghouses.

There was also administrative simplification inacted that the HHS would adopt national standards and use unique identifiers, code sets, and health care transactions.

What is the purpose of a PHR?

PHR’s were created to help use individual’s own medical or health information in other area. Such as weight or exercise tracking, personal wellness initiatives, and chronic conditions.  Individual’s can now contribute and increase responsibility for health care decisions and assistance.

These are web-based repositories for personal health information and the consumer decides who has access to, where it comes from, and what health information is provided.

What is General Semantics?

General Semantics is a self-improvement and therapy program released in 1933.  By adopting this system one can alter human behavior in the direction of greater sanity.

In Alfred Korzybski’s publication “Science and Sanity” general semantics is presented as a theoretical and practical system.  It seeks to regulate human habits and behaviors, first starting in 1920 under the names “human engineering”, and “humanology”.

What is the process of abstraction or the abstraction process?

Something happen: We can not “know” all that happens.  Sensory Impact: What we sense is NOT what happens.  Evaluation: What we describe is NOT what we sense.  Meaning: What it means is NOT what we describe.

Language is just an extension of the human nervous system, and by using it to describe what we go through we cut the experience in half.  Every experience is unique even if it seems to be experienced again, they are always different and have infinite details to each.

In DSRP — what is a Perspective? Use the abstraction process to provide your example.

DSRP is a different lens that we can use to view the world and see many other perspectives.  Event – An individual is trained for more responsibilities at current job.  Object – Current employees expect him to pick up work they do not want or wish to do. Given that he already has other responsibilities they do not understand.  Description – Since I have been in the same position and know how the training for added duties gives current employees false hope.  Inference – I can relate to the trainee and sympathize with the stress they may be under having much higher expectations from co-workers that do not already understand his current job responsibilities.

Using the process of abstraction within General Semantics — provide an example from the perspective of a healthcare administrator.

Event – Employee is let go for low performance reviews and co-worker complaints regarding smells of a recreational drug.  Object – Employee tries to sue the establishment for wrongful termination.  Description – Employee has had multiple talks, reviews for improvement and has well documented actions taken to hep improve employee’s performance.  Inference – Inform all people that need to know of events happening and allow access to all documents the employer has leading up to the employee’s termination.

  1. Great example of abstraction within general semantics. I feel like those types of situations happen more than people are aware. Companies have to be extremely careful now when they are putting employees on a low-performance plan or letting them go because of their performance. I have heard of way too many stories of those scenarios not going well. I always appreciate it when managers overcommunicate so nothing is a surprise.
