What is health care administration?

Health care administration aims to lead or manage the health care system in order to reach as many people as possible.  These are seen in clinical settings such as hospitals and large healthcare corporations.

What is a systems view of the U.S. Health Care Industry?

The focus is around providers of health care services.  Which include nursing homes, retail clinics, diagnostic centers, pharmacies, and etc..  Buyers reimburse these facilities for services rendered while suppliers seek to sell products to the health care providers.  Regulators focus on overseeing the environment and conduct in a safe manner.  Public health agencies seek to finance research and educational activities that the providers supply while also having some oversight on health care services outside of direct provision.

What distinctions are you seeing in the systems view?

There are so many layers to the health care industry that if you are to manage a section then you also should have some cross sectional experience or information on how the other side works.

I am seeing cost-effectiveness, or how can they make more money while also saving.  Some service providers might look into developing a branch for supply, while some suppliers are possibly tossing around the idea of opening up a health care service provider.  All in all it is like a triangle with each division being an angle and if we open up one end of that sector then the other two might get smaller.  There is a give and take and the perfect system is what we strive for but know that it is an intangible goal.

What distinctions are you not seeing?

A couple distintions I do not see are patient focused services.  The health care industry has pretty well consolidated into few players of competition, thus driving prices higher for maximum pay out.
There is not a set flow or chart to follow when dealing with health care services.  There are practices they put in place that mold over time to adjust for the regulations set upon them as well as the supply and demand of patients or environment.

How would you distinguish between regulators and public health agencies?

Regulators are conserned with keeping oversight on health providers for lawful reasons, and keep the environment that the service is provided up to code.  The public health agencies promote certain lifestyle programs and protect/improve health for people and the community.

Can you compare and contrast suppliers and buyers?

Buyers reimburse the health care service for services already given.  Such as medicare and medicaid.  Individuals who do out-of-pocket pay for service also would be a buyer.
Suppliers are companies or people selling products to the health care provider that the buyer recieves from them.  Value chain agian, goes from the supplier to the health  care provider then to the buyer for their needs.  Example – In my physical therapy clinic that I work we purchase products or therapy devices to use with patients.  Then if they feel that it would be useful at home they can purchase the products as well from us.

Some services such as an Alter-G, which helps people improve their gate walk, can also be purchased in time slots.  They can come to the clinic and pay for a session with the machine.  That machine we had to purchase from a supplier to give the patients/clients the option of using Alter-G therapy.

What is organizational design?

It is a structure of how responsibilities, authority, and flow of information are seperated into subunits.  With in the organization these scope of responsibilies and authority is spread vertically as well as horizontally to the subunits to build structure for the communication between subunits.  Information systems are generally used to build the connectiveness and policies or procedures used in the flow of the organization.

Explain and describe how empowerment involves directed autonomy.

Empowerment presents a sense of respect and connectiveness to the employees or managers. (In regards to organization).  Giving empowerment helps contribute productive organizational performance with out changing the assignment of powers or authority.  Workers can feel like the organization respects the beliefs and ideas that could influence organizational outcomes.

  1. Hi Nathan,

Your work is awesome! Honestly, I was struck y analysis paralysis after viewing Dr. Schwandt’s assignment video instructions several times! I suppose my brain is already on Labor Day holiday 🙂 You made it look simple and easy!

    Sincerely,

  2. Hi Nathan,

I love the layout you chose for your map on this assignment. It made for a fun presentation. The real-life example you used for the contrast and compare between suppliers and buyers was great. It is convenient that you all allow patients to purchase therapy products from your clinic, and also allow them to use Alter-G machines that they would otherwise potentially have to find elsewhere. That benefits both the clinic and the patients. It saves a trip and some time for all of the patients that decide to purchase from the clinic. Great work on CM2 and for being the first one to post your assignment!

  3. Hey Nathan,

You map came out great. like super professional looking. I had the same idea but didn’t quite execute it like i had envisioned it. Yours is more like something i wanted. I’m sure i used the wrong template for my idea. Anywho, great job!
