Introduction- Amanda Lakin

Hi, I’m Amanda Lakin. I am married with three children.  My oldest is 19 and just finished her EMT and is awaiting the start of the Paramedic Program. She hopes to go to med school after that and work in trauma. We also have a 14 year old and 11 year old sons. They keep my husband and I busy with all of their activities. I work for a county health department in Central Kansas.  I have worked in public health for almost 2 1/2 years.  Before this I worked for a CAH hospital. I have been a nurse since 2005. I have experience in public health, OR, PACU, med-surg, ER, home health, hospice and clinic nursing.

Research plays a huge role in public health nursing.  We rely heavily on recommendations from KDHE and the CDC on a daily basis. This is especially important right now with COVID-19.  The recommendations, policies and procedures we follow are from research completed by KDHE and CDC.  This has a big impact on how we try to prevent, promote, and treat communicable diseases.  We also use these recommendations for vaccinations. The list is extremely long on how research plays a role for a public health nurse but this is just a quick overview.
