Research Poster OSA

The topic that I have chosen is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) screening. Screening all surgical patients for OSA can assist the health care provider in every phase of care in the peri-operative setting to reduce the risk of post-operative complications. Care plans can be customized to the OSA patient to ensure care is provided appropriately. Being proactive allows for better outcomes then being reactive to a complication that maybe could have been prevented.

Great topic Trisha! A simple screening pre-operatively can have a big effect on patient outcomes. There are many patients who don’t even know they have sleep apnea, but exhibit symptoms unknowingly. Being able to identify these patients before hand can help us as nurses develop a care plan that best applies to the patient. I thought the pie charts reflected good information from your poster.

Sleep apnea affects many people from young to old. I did research on sleep apnea a few years ago because a friend thought she had sleep apnea. There are three main types of sleep apnea, central apnea, obstructive apnea and mixed apnea which is the combination of both. I know you chose obstructive apnea, but what about the other two are those patients at risk too?

Hello Trisha, really like your poster and you choose a wonderful topic, obstructive sleep apnea is a diagnosis that I’m very familiar with due to working in a Long term acute hospital as known as LTACH, Several of the patients suffer from this illness and have to wear PAP, CPAP, and BIPAP..etc to assist them while they’re sleep. Due to device improvements have only had a modest impact on adherence, more attention is being given to educational and behavioral interventions to improve patient adherence (J.Clin,SleepMed,2019). Follow up assessments and interventions is essential to these patients due to different factors can alter the settings need for the patients. Its important to stress the importance of adherence to all the treatments and information provided by healthcare providers.
