Interesting research! In our clinic we have multiple ways we reach out to patients. We have a text messaging system, automatic voice reminders and access to a personal “mychart” to verify appts and communicate with medical staff. When a patient comes to appt, they will receive an summary of what the appt looked like, attached is an appt card and important numbers to contact if needed. I believe all of these things are necessary to keep patients engaged in treatment and following up with appts. With all of those interventions we still have approx 10-15% no show rate, it would be interesting to see how a personalized telephonic nurse call would help to decrease this rate.

Technology has changed the structure of nursing. The promotion of telenursing is beneficial to the medical industries. I cannot speak for all nurses, but the increase in technology and telecommunication gave me the opportunity to incorporate nursing care and procedures. I can follow up with my patients after discharged, schedule follows up appointments, and provides health education. Telenursing has paved the way for safe, efficient and more accessible health care.

I agree that telephonic nursing can indeed reduce the rates of “no show”. Speaking from my perspectives a patient, those calls and messages trigger my memory of appointments or procedures. Sometimes, they are follow- up calls after a procedure. I am particularly thrilled this- encourages me to keep my appointments knowing someone cares. While I prefer a personal touch to the calls, I really don’mind automated reminders. They’re very helpful.

I agree with telephonic nursing reducing the rates of “no show.” I also do not care if its a person calling to remind me or an automated recording, I’m just glad to have the reminder. With telephonic nursing it really has made accessibility to health care more safe and efficient. There have been so many advancements in health care due to technology and I’m sure many more to come!
