How to decrease surgery cancellation rates research poster

Hi there.  I chose to do my poster over how to decrease surgery cancellation rates within a facility.  The reason I chose this is because my facility has a bad problem with high surgery cancellation rates and I am interested to see what other entities have done with success.

I found your poster to be very interesting, I guess I didn’t realize that there was such a high percentage of cancellations of surgery. It was nice to see that just adding some more education was enough to drop some of the rates pretty dramatically. I can’t imagine how frustrating it would be for a patient and their family to be prepared for surgery and have it cancelled, especially after arranging all the plans for that day.

I enjoyed this poster. It’s very true that surgery cancellations are common due to lack of education or information for the patient. I worked in the OR previously, and surgery cancellations effect more than just the patient. Some cases require surgical reps to come in and bring special implants or instrumentation for that procedure, so when that patient no-shows or has to cancel because they weren’t NPO, for example, it becomes a burden for the facility.

I think making facility process improvements is a good idea and can be used in more locations than just surgery. For instance, when we have patients cancel or no-show their appointment, it effects other patients who could have used that appointment time. Great presentation!
