I think the most interesting part of being an investigative journalist is the sense of discovery of being able to find out things that are often hidden from the public and in some cases being kept from the public from people who are cheating the puplic, defraiding them, or creating hard of some kind
There are often things in life where your “spidey sense” tells you something is wrong, so often investigations flow from everyday life, a comment someone makes about something and you think about it and realize that you should dig deeper. Sometimes it can also be event driven, but those can be harder since there may be a lot of attention on a subject and in that case sometimes sources don’t want to speak up. Think about national security for instance. VEry tough to investigative without sources that trust you.
