Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Tiffany. My primary area of clinical experience is in LTACH (Long Term Acute Care Hospital)  in Wichita, Ks. I enjoy my career very much and the environment that I’ve be able to work in. Throughout my career research continues to play a major role in health care not only for today but for the future as well, without research healthcare wouldn’t be what is today. For healthcare providers to be able to provide efficient care all over the world healthcare has to viewed holistically which is known as Evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice is made up of critical thinking and expertise of the healthcare team, along with patients and their families expectations and values in references to their outcomes and treatments that involves proper evaluation  and research to determine the most effective and efficient treatment plan for each individual in order to keep those around us healthy and safe along with having adequate resources available no matter the race, gender, social economical status, etc.

I feel like you bring up a very good point in that while Evidence-based practice is a collection of critical thinking, healthcare teams, and outcomes of treatments it is also a big part the families and patients themselves. A lot of time patients and their families make a decision to try a cutting edge/trial therapy, often times when other therapies have failed, but this is how we make strides in the healthcare field. There has to be changes made for us to continue to progress, and a lot of that is done with research and clinical trials.

Welcome to the course, Tiffany! This is a nice perspective on what EBP means to you, but how do you see EBP used in your practice? Everything from hand washing to patient mobility is research driven. Are there any new or recent changes to patient care initiatives at the facility you work with to promote better patient outcomes?

Hi Tiffany. I’m just up the road from Wichita. I would guess you have had a variety of experiences in a long term acute care hospital. That must give you many ways to experience evidence based practices. I look forward to joining you in class.
