What: This assignment and plectica map was about understanding initially how to create good maps, but it dove deeper into breaking down the complexity of the U.S. healthcare system and how each part is interrelated.

So what: To understand how to become an administrator in healthcare, one must understand healthcare and the complex nature in which it functions. Many of us taking a course such as this are interested or involved some way or another in healthcare. One of my concerns within our healthcare system is who it truly benefits. Is our healthcare system focused on patients or on financial gain? This is why we as healthcare professionals need to understand how the whole system works and how each DSRP is connected and created. It is so we understand what “red tape” we have to deal with or adapt and learn from when we step further out into administration.

Now what: To make a change, one must be knowledgeable about what they want, why they want it, and determined to make it. For someone to be and administrator in healthcare, there needs to be a desire to do good and to make a positive impact on our community. Now it is time for us to utilize this knowledge and understanding on how we can make these desired changes by being adaptive to complex systems.

  2. Kristen- I agree with the Social Networking school being the one that seemed to offer the best advice. I think that this choice of management would help when trying to understand team functioning and give a better view into the performance of employees. I also thought you did a great job overall on your map and it was easy to follow!

  3. Hi! I thought that your map was great. I thought your concept on Social Networking was a great outlook on the topic. Providing employees with the team function would most definitely be a great way to improve the system. I think a lot of organizations lack the social networking and human resource concept within their management outlook. Great job!

  4. Hi Kirsten, i liked the way you described desire path in healthcare, i think you are on point regarding that it is “done through customer feedback or even inquiries. If a healthcare organization does not provide a certain specialty or focus but continues to get calls or requests for the specialty, the organization could look into obtaining this specialty or connecting with another company to provide the option for their customer” but i would substitute customer with patient and i would add that in addition to feedback to improve the quality of the service provided , a desire path might constitute a hospital with a multidisciplinary team to deal with a vast array of diseases and illnesses without having to leave the premise.

    1. So true. My previous employer was a FQHC that did not offer dental services, but we did contract with another FQHC that does offer dental services for our patients. Living in a rural, low socioeconomic area, this is a service of great demand. To grow, we must listen to our patient’ request and honor them as much as possible.
