My article discussed an intervention to decrease CLABSI rates in a pediatric hematology oncology unit. As many know bloodstream infections can be life threatening to children who undergoing chemotherapy and radiation because it causes immune suppression and both can cause oral mucositis. When oral mucositis is not prevented with proper interventions and it can lead to bleeding ulcers and bacterial infections. A hospital in Las Angeles noticed some inconsistency in orders for mucositis prevention such as ordering chlorhexidine rinse. So with a lot of review and collaboration they provided a oral care and hygiene bundle intervention in two hematology oncology units consisting of 48 beds. They nurses had to document cares and charts were audited my charges nurses that cares were being performed. The patient was to brush teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, use sodium bicarbonates rinse twice a day, apply mouth moisturizer as needed, have patient shower or bath daily, and change bedding daily. After intervention was in place the results showed a notable decrease in Mucositis Barrier Injury Laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection by 51.3%.
