At the time of writing my first blog post, I decided to pursue a research topic related to social media/general content consuming and its affect on mental health. After doing a bit more thinking I have elected to leave out general content consuming and focus solely on social media’s affects on mental health. General content consuming is too broad a topic and would require a ridiculous amount of research to properly complete the project. Focusing on social media will allow me to present quality research information over mental health affects.
There are many affects on mental health when it comes to social media usage, and I plan on covering as many subtopics as possible. The main things I’d like to focus on are depression, anxiety and how we interact with our peers after excessive social media usage. I’d also like to cover other topics such as, sleep issues, cyberbullying, and jealousy. These are all closely related, but still important to talk about in my opinion.

My main research question will be, “What are the negative mental health problems associated with excessive social media usage?”
The secondary question I plan on investigating is, “What can we do to reduce these negative mental health affects on future generations?”
I haven’t yet started on my research for this project, but I feel I may be able to use some resources and databases through the Forsyth Library. Communication and Mass Media Complete should prove to be helpful in my research because it covers social media in general. I’m not entirely sure if I’ll be able to use any other databases provided by the Forsyth library.
Hello Ethan, great post! I think that this is a very interesting topic given the last 2 years. Social media is a tool that almost everyone uses daily, so I think that it is important that we look at the impact of social media on our mental health! I also like how you are narrowing down your research topics. Good luck with your assignment!
The connection between social media and mental health is an important subject to understand now more than ever because everyone is using it in some form or another.
Hey Ethan, love your post. It seems we all have something in common. I wanted to study the effects of cartoons on children’s mental health. However, your research scope is much broader than mine. Social media itself is a huge collection, and I have to admire you for wanting to study such various sub-topics as depression, anxiety, sleep issues, cyberbullying, and jealousy. I also believe that these effects are very valuable to study. Can’t wait to see what you got.
Hi Ethan,
I am glad that you have picked great topic which you can find out so many supportive articles related to this. And I am pretty sure that most of us are not realizing how social media is impacting our health. There are so many social media apps available, misuse of those technologies is harmful for us.
You have picked to focus on are depression, anxiety and how we interact with our peers after excessive social media usage, that’s major health issues. Adding up other topics as you’ve mentioned sleep issues, cyberbullying, and jealousy, which will help you to get better research result.
Thank you!
Hi Ethan, I do find it important about the links to social media and mental illness. For me if I take a break from social media, I tend to feel better about myself as I am not worried whats going on with others.
