Early Retirement is it right for you?

My research ideas:

My initial research idea: Is it possible to get people more active by creating an interactive mobile game?

My current research idea: Are there benefits and expectations to retiring early?

The reason for the change is that I have changed focus and am no longer sure which direction I want to go. I still want to get a degree, just not confident in what major. Since it will be possible for me to retire early in five years, I wonder what life will be like after working since I was 16.

Some possible research questions that I would be interested in:

What are the benefits and expectations of retiring early?

Do people that retire early have long, meaningful lives?

What is there to do when you retire early?

Research already started:

I have not begun researching my idea since my idea keeps evolving. Once I get settled, I do not anticipate having problems with finding relative research sources.

Peruse Forsyth Library three databases:

Employees’ intentions to retire early: a case of planned behavior and anticipated work conditions

van Dam, Karen ; van der Vorst, Janine D.M ; van der Heijden, Beatrice

Journal of career development, 2009, Vol.35 (3), p.265-289

…. The results showed that employees who felt pressure from their spouse to retire early had a strong intention to leave the workforce before the official retirement age, that is 65…

I found this one interesting because it discusses that spouses may have a hand in deciding to retire early. It outlines how if someone is engaged in their current work, they are less likely to retire early.

‘All those things together made me retire’: a qualitative study on early retirement among Dutch employees

Reeuwijk, Kerstin G ; de Wind, Astrid ; Westerman, Marjan J ; Ybema, Jan Fekke ; van der Beek, Allard J ; Geuskens, Goedele A

BMC public health, 2013-05-28, Vol.13 (1), p.516-516

…. One way in which this can be achieved is by employees refraining from retiring early…

I found this article more attractive because they did qualitative research and interviewed early retirees about why they wished to retire early. I have my own ideas why I want to retire early, but I will enjoy reading this to see why the retirees in this study decided to retire early and see if they match my ideas.

Is retirement good for your health? A systematic review of longitudinal studies

Heide, Iris ; Rijn, Rogier ; Robroek, Suzan ; Burdorf, Alex ; Proper, Karin

BMC public health, 2013-12-13, Vol.13 (1), p.1180-1180

I am interested in this article for selfish reasons. I do not want to be one of those that retire and end up sickly and die early. Grant, I already have cancer, but I do not want to give up the fight and lose my battle. If I can stay in remission, I would like to do some things on my bucket list.

About Tiffany Warren

I am an older student with two adult daughters that are 23 and 19 years old. I am living with cancer but try to keep my spirits up and continue with my long-term goals. In five years, I will have thirty years of service with the company I work for now and plan on retiring at that time. I am attending college to help battle chemo brain. At times it does seem to help.

  1. It is unfortunate that you had to abandon your initial research idea. I found it to be a fun and interesting topic. However, I am glad you found one that you are confident in researching and exploring. Retiring early is something wanted by many if not all people. I am sure you will find some great things about this topic and I am looking forward to see what you can do with it in the end.

  2. This is an engaging new research topic. I am most interested in your question of what people do after they retire early. More specifically, it would be interesting to know how many people return to work after they retire, even if it is just a part-time job. The research you showed from your databases seems promising! Also, it is relevant due to more people retiring at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

I was wondering what your secondary research topic would be? This research should be very informative, and since you can retire early in 5 years, this topic can be beneficial in aiding your decision to stay longer or retire early! I hope you can narrow down these questions to a single topic to study for the research proposal.

  3. Hi Tiffany, I’ve been meaning to get a chance to comment on you, and I admire the fact that you had the strength to go to college despite your illness. I was really touched when you said that in five years, you would have dedicated 30 years to your company. Any company would be lucky to have you. Considering early retirement is a great topic for you to talk about, although I might not say I’m looking forward to your research enlightening me, I haven’t even started employment yet. I am still eager to see the results of your research, which will allow me to compare and contrast the benefits and attitudes of Chinese and American people after retirement.
