Thoughts on the Research Proposal

The upcoming assignment for our research proposal does indeed seem like a huge challenge. However, I’m confident I can meet the challenge and successfully complete the assignment. Here are some of my ideas about the upcoming challenge.

What I Find Confusing
I’m not at all confused about the instructions themselves – they are clear – but instead I’m somewhat apprehensive about the actual content. Specifically, I’m concerned about whether or not I can find a topic that is interesting and relevant enough. I simply am too excited about any one particular topic, so it worries me. The instructions tell me to “Target Area of Interest“, but nothing has “grabbed” me to much, to be honest!

However, in reading I did find a particular area of weakness where cybersecurity is concerned (my major concentration). That is the area of work-from-home (WFH) employees. It seems that there’s a huge gap in security that’s been caused by a lack of concern and discipline for good cybersecurity practices among WFM workers. They just don’t seem to care or be aware of the good and bad things involved with working at home, and it’s caused a dilemma among corporate IT professionals. (It’s harder to police the remote workers than it is to monitor and police the on-site emplployees.)

What I Think Will be Most Challenging

I think it will be challenging to find good existing research on this topic. The sintructions tell me to “Begin a research journal” and I have done so but I wish I had more material than I do. I did find a couple of papers written by cybersecurity firms (one was HP’s team) but there’s not a whole lot out there. Probably the reason for this is that it’s a recent development since remote work has increased only over the last year and a half to 2 years.

What I Think Might be Most Fun

The learning itself is what I find most fun. Writing and research and paying attention to things like formatting aren’t what I consider “fun” but they do help me to structure my knowledge. The real fun lies in the actual obtaining and learning of new information, however. I’ve always enjoyed discovering new things. One benefit of this course is that it’s helped me to see how this learning can actually be classified in an organized manner.

Conclusion

I think I’ll be able to successfully complete my assignment, but I realize it might not be the “perfect” task I would prefer. Nevertheless, it will be a worthwhile excercise and I’m sure that I’ll not only get to put into practice what we’ve been learning this whole semester – but I might even learn something new in the actual subject matter.

No matter what, it will be a worthwhile endeavor!

  1. Sounds like an awesome topic!
If your area is light on previous studies, widen your search. What are related things that might still have some relevance to your question or methods?
