General Employer Information

Atlantis is an ocean-themed resort in the Bahamas. It quite literally has conference rooms with the names of those in Greek mythology, i.e., Poseidon. The resort hosts a wide range of accommodations built around its waterpark called aquaventure. The property was opened in 1968 and owned by Resorts International (owned by Merv Griffin). Later down the line, the resort was bought by South American businessman, Sol Kerzner in 1998 and transformed the property into what we know today. The resort holds many towers being the beach, coral, royal and cove towers as well as harborside. Present day Atlantis is owned by Brookfield Hospitality. This information I have gathered from taking a tour of Atlantis and learning about its history.

Why I’m Interested

I have interned at Atlantis resort as a freshman in college in their information technology department. From what I have seen, the work environment is like that of a family. From the moment I started, everyone treated me as the younger brother in the group. Furthermore, my coworkers all were eager to answer any questions that I had and helped me to learn everything very quickly. What drew me in as well was the fact that Mr. Pinder came to our college (Univ. of the Bahamas) and made the effort to speak in one of our classes.  It is a joy to be apart of the biggest employer in my home country. He spoke about the impact the resort had on the visitors’ stay in the Bahamas and how each person played a major role.  If there is one thing anyone knows about the Bahamas, is that Atlantis exists. I would be able to say that I was part of the reason visitors enjoyed their stay and remained connected. Lastly, the resort holds major competitions such as the battle for Atlantis basketball tournament, and most recently, the Big 3 competition as well. In all honesty, one major factor as well is that Atlantis also pays more than many other businesses in The Bahamas.

  2. How is career advancement determined within the department and is there room for growth?
  3. Is there a professional development track for employees?
  4. What are you looking for most in a potential candidate?

Central Bank (The Bahamas)

General Employer Information

The Bahamas central bank was created and established on June 1st, 1974. Its purpose is to implement independent monetary policy and carry out supervisory roles in the financial sector since The Bahamas gained independence on July 10th, 1973. There are many functions carried out by the central bank which includes banking, bank supervision, managing currency, research, implementing policies, auditing, managing the exchange and so on. Their core functions entail making sure the Bahamian dollar maintains its value, promote monetary stability, advise the government etc.

Why I’m Interested

Working for this establishment would be a great honor. Being able to put the skills I have learned in school to use in the financial sector. I’ve had an interest of looking at numbers and it is essentially what the central bank does. Using data analytics to gather, process, and analyze complex data sets to determine trends etc. Furthermore, it is one of the few companies in The Bahamas that does not outsource or looking to foreigners for big tech roles in their organization. An organization that puts Bahamians first when it comes to bigger opportunities is an organization worth being apart of.

Questions to help me succeed?

  1. What is expected from team members in this position?
  2. What is a typical day like within the organization/department?
  3. Are there opportunities to grow and progress?
  4. Is this role more team oriented or self-driven?

Synergy Bahamas

General Employer Information

Synergy Bahamas was started in the month of January in 2006. A band of businessman and professionals in the field of IT had a vision to offer training to individuals looking to get into the information technology and other fields. Their goal was to make international training and certification programs available to Bahamians who sought after them. Furthermore, they strived to establish quality training that is up to par and compete with international organizations. Synergy Bahamas was able to gain the appropriate credentials and establish multiple partnerships (CompTIA, HR certification institute, NAECOB etc.) which allowed it to firmly reach its goal in standard training. They offer training in business, technology, digital media & arts as well as culinary.

Why I’m Interested

A few years ago, I attended Synergy Bahamas eager to gain knowledge in the basics of IT. I met a lot of amazing individuals that helped me to pick the right courses and offered resources throughout my time attending the institution. Furthermore, the classes that I took helped me tremendously and was well worth it. While attending, I was able to attain the IT and networking fundamentals certifications as well as the A+ and Network+. I would be interested in becoming an educator (part time) and passing on knowledge that I have gained since taking the courses. I am interested in being apart of helping those who want to enter the field of IT, become establish. In The Bahamas, Synergy is the gold standard in offering courses for the internationally recognized certifications such as the A+, Network+ and so on. Being able to teach at such an organization would be an honor.  Ms. Burnside was very quick to say Synergy has a very high success rate in students passing certification exams and job placement. This has further increased my interested in the company.

Walt Disney World Resort

General Employer Information

The idea of Disney started with a newly built theme park in 1955 in Anaheim, California (Disneyland) proposed by Walt Disney. The overall idea behind Disney was to have a place where everyone can go to have fun, no matter the age. In 1971, Walt Disney World was opened in lake Buena vista (which would make this year it’s 50th anniversary) but unfortunately, Walt Disney was not alive to see his vision come to pass. It is based off Disneyland but had other additions to it such as lodging and novel ideas. Today lies multiple parks within Walt Disney World Resort such as Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. According to orlandofuntickets.com, “EPCOT” (experimental prototype community of tomorrow) was intended to be a testing ground for ideas for future cities. Disney has become so popular that millions of visitors pass through each year with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. There are a total of twelve theme parks spreading across multiple cities including California, Florida, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, and China.

Why I’m Interested?

I am interest because it is Disney! As a kid, I have always been a fan of Disney and would love to be apart of making magic. In speaking with Julie Bisceglia, I was ensured that the work environment within the organization is like that of a family. Furthermore, there are numerous opportunities for growth and advancement. With there being multiple parks in different cities, there are opportunities to also relocate if you desired. This allows you to experience new places, meet new people and learn new cultures. Additionally, mention of job security also strengthened my interest in working for Disney. The company values its employee’s health and safety as well as their education (agreeing to pay tuition in full no matter the degree). Disney continues to push the envelope in entertainment and are rapidly expanding in multiple aspects. As we know, Disney has revolutionized the animation industry and was among the first to use animation as a form of entertainment on TV (Arun & Timothy 2018).

Questions to help me succeed?

  1. Will there be training provided to me post-onboarding?
  2. Are there any mentors on staff?
  3. The work environment can be stressful, are there any mechanisms in place to help with this?
  4. What do you find most challenging about the role?
  5. What makes a candidate a perfect fit?

  1. Hey Ta’Karris, you have some interesting choice for the companies. Atlantis resort would be an awesome place to work at. I never heard of synergy Bahamas but it seems like an interesting place to work as well and it is of course a very good concept.

  2. Wow, I remember a princess dream when I was a kid. If I can work at the Disney Resort, that dream will come true.
Disney is a place that girls all over the world dream of. The commercial lines of entertainment venues are very fragile. During COVID-19, Disney Resorts should be at a loss. When people go to school or work, Disney’s visitor volume will drop significantly. If you increase innovation in entertainment projects or change marketing methods, you can reduce losses.
