The Next Frontier of Journalism

I am very excited to take this class, especially with the blog, to see everyone’s ideas and thought processes about specific hot topics!

I plan to go into some type of journalism for a career when I graduate from FHSU, so I am very interested in news, more specifically, how effectively it is packaged and delivered to its viewers. During the beginning of 2019 and COVID-19, I noticed that Twitter, at least my Twitter feed, transitioned from more than just pop culture to hard-hitting, fast news.

My question is that without modern social media, especially Twitter, would Journalism and news delivery itself be dead? I know most people my age, if not all, do not have cable television to watch a news channel. Streaming services are the new way to watch favorite television shows or movies, so it follows that this news would be absorbed through these services too. What will news channels ratings be in 10 years? Convergence and journalism have gone hand in hand for years. Social media can provide news with print, video, and audio with just one click to a link. However, is this type of news reaching more people because of the quick bite it gives? More fascinating, do the stories get clicked, or does the paragraph of information give people enough. Is news transforming into a buffet of little bites of information, where you can learn more if you like?

In another direction, is news delivery solely by print that does not rely on social media platforms immortal? We know that news in the past was mainly for the more proper and educated people, so I wonder if we are seeing that divide happen in real-time. Are the big-time new sources like New York Times and ABC news being made to stay in this category of proper news, with proper Journalism. If Twitter is easy and accessible, will it create its own type of news source itself? Overall I believe there will be a struggle in the near future between journalists who have a degree and journalists born from social media. A new era of social influencers or even people by a happening event is more critical than a news source because they have the followers and have the story out to people as it unfolds. Sure someone could say these are just tiny bites of news, but with all these tiny bites, a person could be fulfilled and not want the deeper details of the story. What will Journalism evolve into as we trek farther into the world of technology and social media?

I saw that one person in my topic group suggested the discussion group be named “The RM Group,” which I agree with. It is simple and gets down to business!

  1. Preston,
This is an interesting topic. I can remember when I used to walk to my parent’s quarter-mile driveway to fetch the newspaper for my parents. Now, I believe that they subscribe to the local newspaper online, and my mom reads articles all over the internet. However, she does not know the difference between a real news website and someone’s propaganda. I check the local news on an app on my phone. That way, I can read the articles that I am interested in. Good luck this semester.
