Potential Employer- Week 4

For week four, we are choosing four potential employers. I ended up choosing IBM, H.P. Enterprise, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services.

1.

IBM

1 New Orchard Road

Armonk, New York 10504-1722

United States

#: 1-800-426-4968

https://www.ibm.com/us-en?lnk=m

There is no contact person on file; they have A.I. You must go through them first when you call.

Information:

IBM or otherwise known as International Business Machines. It is one of the world’s leading computer hardware and networking and A.I. and robotics. Some of the Inventions that IBM has made you probably use every day and never even knew they were the ones who made them. Like the floppy disk, ATM, Magnetic stripe card, UPC barcode, and SQL programming. IBM was founded in 1911 and was once called Computing-tabulating-Record (CRT). Anything that has to do with data or the internet in general, IBM has a hand in it. IBM is one of the 30 companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. They have over 345,000 employees.

Interests

I have been interested in IBM ever since I wanted a job in the computer networking/Data Analytics field. I am also very interested in this company because of the growth it has shown for years; they are “the 2nd largest U.S. firm in terms of the number of employees (435,000 worldwide), the 4th largest in terms of market capitalization, the 9th most profitable, and the 19th largest firm in terms of revenue”. The company’s innovation is insane; as mentioned above, they have invented products that people use every day and still improve the ideas and come up with bigger and better ones. The company also knows they treat their employees equally, and no job is better than the other. Further research on this company has strengthened my desire to apply there.

Questions:

Does IBM allow remote work for internships for college students finishing their degrees?

What kind of on-site training is there for the coding positions?

2.

H.P. Enterprises

W.W. Corporate Headquarters – Spring TX – United States

1701 E Mossy Oaks Rd

Spring, TX 77389

https://www.hpe.com/us/en/home.html

#: 1-800-633-3600

The contact person is filling out a form or applying, and they will send you contact info as well.

Information:

HPE, better known as Hewlett Packard Enterprise, is an Information Technology company in computer hardware, software, and networking. With headquarters in Texas, they still have over eight offices elsewhere across the U.S. HPE is around the top 100 companies in the Fortune 500. With a total workforce of about 59,400 people. They play a significant role in the cloud computing area of technology as well as helping other companies with analyzing data and applying it to help better themselves and the customer.

Interests:

HPE is a very successful company; they have been growing immensely and has climbed up in the ranks of the S&P 500 and the Fortune 500. This company has impressive training for new employees and is one of the highest-rated workplaces in the world. They are helping companies worldwide use their data to better the company and increase performances across the stage. Researching this company has helped me better understand why it is an excellent choice to try and work for them.

Questions:

How does the company offer opportunities for improvement in the first few years?

Do they allow remote jobs for people?

3.

Microsoft

One Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA, USA 98052

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/?ql=2

#: 1 (425) 882-8080

Contact person is through their website where you will get a contact member or an A.I.

Information:

Microsoft is the world’s biggest computer software company. I know everyone at FHSU knows who they are or has heard of them. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Xbox are the most significant products. Microsoft has its hands in anything that involves a computer or the internet. They are also in every vital stock you can think of, from the Nasdaq to the S&P 500. Microsoft has about 182,268 employees.

Interest:

My interest in Microsoft has been significant since I was old enough to know what a computer is. Microsoft will soon be even more important for the gaming world, a big hobby. They bought out major gaming companies just months ago to change how we see the internet and video games. My most significant interest in them is how they deal with their data and the products they use to store and analyze the data, with excel being the most prominent software for companies worldwide. The more I research Microsoft, the more I desire to be a part of them.

Questions:

What would be the area of data I would be in, and would I get to choose what information I would like to track?

In what ways do you measure success in this company?

4.

Amazon Web Services

410 Terry Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98109-5210

1-206-266-1000

https://aws.amazon.com/?nc2=h_lg

the contact person is unavailable because they have you through an automated system when you try and contact them

information:

Amazon Web Services or AWS is a cloud computing company. Is it the same company as amazon, but it’s like another division of amazon that you probably know? they are about 13% of Amazon’s total revenue. “Amazon controls more than a third of the cloud market, almost twice its next closest competitor.” They provide servers and data storage for significant companies to go back and look at it and make changes depending on how the data shows; not only that, but they have data that can change how you view things. The best example of this is the NFL; you ever see stats in the NFL that pop up on the screen; this is because the NFL uses AWS to do all the data and analyze for them.

Interest:

I have just learned about AWS in the last year. They had blown me out of the water when I researched them. You don’t even have to be working for the company to learn how to use AWS. This way, you can learn how to use and market yourself to become valuable in the data workforce. It also is a significant company that believes in taking care of its workers. They provide more than enough training for the worker, and the benefits are crazy excellent. They even are big on helping better communities to move their offices by building even more admirable and affordable apartments for the workers and the community.

Questions:

What kind of team projects do you have for the data positions?

Can this job be remote?

  1. Hello, I liked seeing the employers you found. The mention of AWS caught my attention, as I’m actually using some of their services for a side project of mine.

I’m still in the middle of working on it, but you can see the code here (the name is probably going to change): https://github.com/CodeSofty/recipecrudapp

They offer programmers some amazing tools, at a very affordable (sometimes free, like in my case), price! Knowing how to use the cloud is very important in today’s world, which seems to be focusing more and more on such tools.

As for the other companys you mentioned, I think they’re great choices, and shows a clear interest in the big players in the tech world. Microsoft is a huge player in software and gaming these days, so either direction would be a great career move. I’d personally be more interested in gaming data, but that’s just because I like to game as a hobby. Good post, keep it up!

  2. Hi! I also put down microsoft for a similar reason. They are huge in the gaming industry nowadays and gaming is one of my favorite hobbies. I feel like they would be a wonderful company to pursue a job for.

  3. Over the years that I have been enrolled at FHSU, I have heard a lot about Amazon and their cloud. With Amazon being such a huge company I would like to think there is a lot of opportunities to move up within the company and hopefully travel. I definitely will be looking more into this and what careers are offered.

  4. You certainly seem confident in your career path! It’s a luxury I wish could be afforded to everyone. Having a specialized field-of-study and knowing exactly how you can make the most of it has always been a prohibitive hurdle from my perspective. I don’t exactly have a good idea regarding what to do with my interests. I also accrue more interests all the time, so I’m really caught between a rock and a hard place for future planning. To that end, conglomerates like IBM and Amazon Communication Services might be reasonable options for me. The stratus of those industries lends itself to more professional mobility.
