Diffusion of Innovation: Online Education

Online education is broad and has been out for many years. I left the title broad, but I am actually focusing in on a specific element of online education. This particular focus relates to specialized online education. Essentially it entails education that is not regularly taught at educational institutions and can be best related to self taught education. For example, learning how to build a computer is not traditionally taught in a college, k through 12, or other traditional forms of education.  I got into this idea through a business project I was doing for my opportunity evaluation class last semester.

I feel this section falls somewhere between implementation and confirmation. It is an already well established market, and with the help of COVID-19 specialized online education is close to the confirmation stage. I would say I am in the Early Majority for specialized online education, as I was taking these types of classes before I got to college.

The biggest innovation of this market is allowing individuals to learn about specialized fields without paying college tuition rates. Quarantined and the shut downs from COVID-19 have helped solidify and grow this industry with a growth of 14.6% per year (E-Learning).

I would say that there is a couple areas of online education that are in the Early Adopters or Innovator categories that will start to expand soon. One such category is pushing

specialized education into the hands of elementary to middle school students. As stated before, my business project related to this field and its focus was specialized education with a focus on middle school students. It gives students an opportunity to learn about technology like computers or other machines at a young age in ways that goes past traditional education. I believe this to be in around the cusp of Innovator and Early Adopters because it is not an established market. There is plenty of support for online education, but nothing taps into the specialized side yet. The only potential competitor or area that is established is gifted programs. However, gifted programs are not available for the average student, and marketed towards the parents, this idea will open a new avenue for education for elementary to middle school students.

  1. Being self-taught is a lot easier these days with the internet.
I think as higher education becomes more and more expensive we will see a lot more of this become common practice. One of my friend’s cousins just graduated high school and he was able to go to a high school where his curriculum was focused on computer engineering (I believe it was something like that). I would have loved to have that kind of opportunity when I was in high school.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. I know when COVID-19 hit and schools were shut down, I found myself missing those face to face interactions and at times, digital instructions were not enough for me to be able to retain the information needed to get through the class. I found myself looking up online lessons that were offered for free through youtube and would regularly keep up. Self teaching college algebra through youtube lessons was very difficult but it would have been even harder if I did not have people regularly pushing out content that I needed.

  3. The education framework is evolving quickly, With the assistance of correspondence innovation and expanded web network, it has led to expect understudies to further developing individual growth opportunities. accommodation is the main advantage of web based learning with the assistance of advanced gadgets like tablets or PCs.
