Diffusion of Innovation: Foldable Phones and Electric Cars

The innovation I’ve decided to talk about is folding screens on phones. I would consider myself in the 5th and final stage of the adoption process. I remember hearing about the Galaxy Fold a few years ago and thinking that it looked very cool, but I never thought I’d buy one because they were $2000. It definitely took me awhile before I made my way though all the stages and took the plunge. I decided to buy the Galaxy Fold 3 last at a large discount last year and haven’t looked back.

Considering folding phones are not really widely adopted, I’d put myself in the early adopter category despite the fact that they have been around for a few years. They have always been expensive and bulky, so it is not surprising that most people have not bothered picking one up yet. There is a smaller model called the Galaxy Flip 3 and there are more options coming to the market soon from other brands, but folding phones are still mostly uncommon.

I am normally an early adopter when it comes to new phone or computer tech, but I am more of a luggard when it comes to many other things, such as cars. I am not a huge fan of electric cars because of their initial cost, repair costs, slow charging times, etc. They are impractical for many situations like off-roading and long travel. The technology also does not work well with semi-trucks because the batteries required to make the torque necessary for towing large trailers do not have a reasonable capacity, or they are far to large and heavy. I do think electric vehicles are the future and some of the newer models look really good, especially the pickup trucks (which I drive if you couldn’t tell). I believe after the technology has matured for another 7-10 years more I will probably be much more likely to purchase one.

  1. I’m very much a laggard in regard to phones. Were it up to me, I’d still be using a flip phone right now! The inherent accessibility of phones is almost a deterrent from my perspective. In public, I like being able to devote undivided attention. To that end, used an iPhone until 2019, and I’d never sent a text message until 2021. Alas, the times are changing without me! Foldable phones certainly sound interesting. If they end up sticking around for another 10 years, I’m sure I’ll arrive at a similar conclusion.

  2. I remember seeing these first come out and being very intrigued! Honestly, the only thing holding me back is that I really like my iPhone.

I totally agree that electric cars are in our future! I haven’t adopted such technology for the same reasons that you stated. I think we still have a good few years before they really reach the masses.
