Diffusion of Innovations: Wearable Activity Trackers

Wearable activity trackers have been a new innovation that went from a small device clipped to one’s hip or shoe to full on smart device that work independent of cell devices.

In 2014 I started running more and I wanted to purchase a wearable activity tracker to track my steps but I also wanted something more that would track sleep and all types of workouts, not just steps. I was leery of the Fitbit due to the news talking about skin irritations on the area where it was worn. I did a lot of research into the idea of an activity tracker and I chose to purchase a Misfit Shine.

I reached stage five, Confirmation, because I did enough research to know that I wanted a wearable, made the purchase, and continue to wear them today.

I would like to consider myself an early adopter because while wearable step trackers were popular, not many people were using a full activity tracker. The Shine was also one of the first wearable activity trackers that could be worn during swimming. Since I had access to a pool 24/7 this was an important factor in my purchase. As an early adopter I am higher up on the opinion leader role, which can influence others to purchasing the innovative technology. After my purchase my husband found how much I enjoyed the tracker and purchased Fitbits for his family and later purchased the Fitbit Flex 2 for me to wear as it was also a waterproof device but had more capabilities like “move reminders” and now we both wear an Apple Watch.

Innovative technology that I fall in a different category would be my Cricut. I just purchased the device a year ago wanting to make shirts and cups and name tags for my kids. Instead the Cricut has sat on my desk for over an year, unused. I appreciate the technology but the time to learn the product has not been a priority. I would say I am in the “Late Majority” category for this innovation.

  1. Hi Kaci!

I have a apple watch and it does some of the things a fit bit would do. I find them really neat and handy especially when you are on the run and can’t use your phone or have time to check it. Along with tracking your health or steps. One thing mine does that I find interesting is tell me when I need to breathe maybe because I am stressed or out of breath.

    1. I love my Apple watch! Having cell service without a phone has been the best thing. I wish they could incorporate Spotify or Apple playlists to stream without the cell phone eventually. I like to run and I think that would be the best feature so I can listen to music without brining my phone.

  2. I have an apple watch as well and I love the activity tracker on it. Especially being an athlete I love to see how many calories I burned or how many steps I took or how many miles I ran. One of the best innovations created.

    1. Yes! I completed 75Hard! a year ago and the activity tracking is by far the best. I loved that it showed my route and split times. I like the cadence tracking too so I can pick a Spotify playlist based off the tempo I was running at. I went from walking 3 miles on my workout to running over 5 a day because of 75Hard

  3. I currently have the Apple watch. It is my second one and I primarily use it so I can see messages while at work if its a home emergency or something like that. Having my phone out is frowned upon so I try to refrain from it. I will say my fitbit was one of my favorites due to the battery life. The Apple watch’s battery life is terrible.

    1. I agree with this completely. My husband loves it because he cannot used his phone at work either and having access to see his texts right away has been so convenient for him. However, I hate having to charge it all the time. I currently have the 5 and I will not upgrade again until they improve the battery life. The Misfit would go for weeks without a charge and I do miss that!
