Here is my presentation over topic 3 and 4 in our book “Understanding Research Methods”. I go with Theories in topic 3 and experimental and nonexperimental in topic 4.

  1. Hi James!

As you noted in your presentation, your topic areas closely aligned with my sections on qualitative and quantitative research. I think you provided excellent examples of how to approach deductive (quantitative) or qualitative (inductive) research. It is interesting to think about everything that goes into research. Making sure you are not biasing the data in any way leads to having to think about blind vs double blind. Making sure you have a representative sample for both the experimental group and the control group. I feel like a group of researchers could really get into the weeds, and slow down the progress of their research, just trying to come up with everything that needs to be considered.

  2. Nice presentation, there were a lot points that made sense and was very clear. Especially about qualitative and quantitative research. Being that in my presentation I discussed about it as well.

  3. Hi James,

I appreciate how you applied an example to the text. I think it would also be beneficial to know that when considering a theory most are studied across groups and not individuals.

I was curious on your take of the graphic in Topic 3 and where you believe is the “start” of the chain? Because, like stated, you can have a deductive approach (which would start with a theory) or inductive which would start from an observation standpoint.

  4. James,
I thought you had a well put together presentation, it was easy to follow along with you through each slide.
