Week 14 Final Hypothesis

Final Hypothesis:  The negative physical and mental health effects of cramped conditions and isolation experienced during long duration space missions can be mitigated by a combination of ergonomic design of interior space, and electronic diversions such as computer games and digital literature.
Methods: I would like to have those who are being considered for potential missions to Mars live for seven months in a mock up of the module they would need to live in for the journey.  The time period is based on the time that it takes to get to Mars.  I would have two separate modules.  The first one would have the normal design that is used currently in Nasa spacecraft.  The second one would be redesigned specifically to make it more comfortable and ergonomic it would also have a recreation station.  Each participant will be given a series of psychological tests prior to the experiment to establish a baseline.  When the experiment begins we will have the participants do daily video interviews with the psychologists to try to determine their daily mental state over the duration of the experiment.

Results: I will compare the two groups for changes in mental state during the duration of the experiment to determine if the effects of confinement and isolation can be mitigated by making the living space more comfortable and by providing escapism.

  1. Hi Jared,
That sounds like a lot of variables, if you want to limit the independent variables to use of electronic devices for communication or use of video games, that would be fine.
