  1. Your initial research idea and your current research idea. If there are changes, tell us how they are different and why. What led you to change your focus?

For my first research post I did not have anything chosen. I was more focused on just beginning the class. But after doing some reflection on what I wanted to research. I was curious if the rise of mental illness a direct correlation to increased technology use. Since I am in health care, I wanted to combine technology with the affects.

What do you want to find out in your research area?

Has an increase in the use of technology affected the rise of mental illness in the U.S.?

What are the highest types of mental illnesses we are a seeing?

Have you already found research related to your idea? If so, what is that research?

I have begun doing a little research over Spring break. I have a good idea of what I am looking for to begin this search.

“More use of technology is linked to later increases in attention, behavior and self-regulation problems for adolescents already at risk for mental health issues, a new study from Duke University finds.” (Jones,2017)

Jones, Alison. 05/03/17. “More Technology Use Linked to Mental Health Issues In At-Risk Adolescents.” https://today.duke.edu/2017/05/more-technology-use-linked-mental-health-issues-risk-adolescents

The reason for using an older article is to begin to look at the past and see within a few years on the effects.

“U.S. adolescents and young adults are in the midst of a mental health crisis, particularly among girls and young women. The rise of digital media may have played a role in this problem via several mechanisms.” (Twenge, 2020)

Twenge, Jean. 03/27/2020. “Increases in Depression, Self-Harm, and Suicide Among U.S. Adolescents after 2012 and Links to Technology Use: Possible Mechanisms.” https://prcp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.prcp.20190015

Peruse Forsyth Library Databases and/or our library guide to identify at least three databases you could use to begin your search for related research.

These are some of what I found the most compelling when it came to my topic. They gave different views on the whole area that I am researching. Mental health with too much technology is growing rapid these days. We will see what I can dig up for this assignment. Goodluck to us all!

  1. At the beginning, I was kind of like you. I gave it some thought but didn’t have a clear idea of what I was wanting to write about. I like this idea. I think mental health is becoming more important nowadays. I think getting the Informatics side of it would be very interesting.
Hope your research goes good! 🙂

  2. You’ve picked a good topic. I think you’ll find a number of articles about increased social media used during the pandemic. Technology use has probably skyrocketed during the pandemic as people have less physical things to do. I am interested to learn whether technology use is good or bad for the mind. Social media can ruin the self-esteem of the youth and encourage keep up with the jones’ behavior in adults. Technology use may also be linked to a sedentary lifestyle which is detrimental to one’s health. It appears that you’ve found many articles regarding this topic. I’m confident you will find a wealth of information on this topic.
