I will be covering my beat over Entertainment concentrating on Arts Journalism. I would be covering topics involving visual arts, film, literature, music, theater, and architecture within (but not limited to) the local area. I will try to prioritize local events first, but if something within the nearby region happens that is relevant and interesting then I may reach out a bit. I should have my first beat story submitted by 09/12.
What the editor can expect:
If I know there is a story another person is covering, I will work with them to see if there are different angles we could cover or choose a different story all together. Aside from that, I will try to have multiple stories I can cover at any given time. My routine responsibilities will be staying informed on upcoming events and reaching out to the people in charge (and other participants) for interviews and in-depth perspectives on said events. Meetings will require me to be present for these events, which could be anywhere from attending exhibits and shows to tuning into live stream events for further details. Ideally, I would like to obtain at least one interview with a notable character, plus a couple quotes to throw in for safe measure.
Some institutions I’m currently looking at include FHSU and other surrounding schools, the Hays Public Library, possibly some nearby music stores, local studios/galleries, and a variety of different local venues. Topics and issues concerning my beat include local shows, exhibits, notable achievements from local figures, and other issues surrounding the arts (such as the impact of Covid-19 on local artists). The places and officials I will need to visit will be determined by the story I am covering.
This will work well, especially since there might be some online “exhibits” happening due to COVID. I believe Moss-Thorns is planning something later this semester. There should be ample opportunities to covering/reporting on events or upcoming exhibits. And it should allow for multiple sources to be covered. Could include artist profiles, art center features, etc.
