Origins
In China has had major developments in their economy but the discussion about minimum wage has been something China has needed to deal with for some time. As a result, China enacted the Minimum Wage policy in 2003 to improve their minimum wage system. But because the period of the policy was short there were many problems with it. To help close the gap from the very wealthy to the super poor the policy needs changes. Currently Chinas policy does not include medical insurance, pension insurance and industrial injury insurance and other insurance expense. So, to combat this china needs to “first, [create] increases in minimum wages [so the] health can improve of low-wage workers and their families.” (Leigh, 2019, p.1). In addition to that training can help as well. Studies show “Perhaps the most-studied determinant of wage growth for minimum wage workers is the extent of on-the-job train” (Even and Macpherson, 2003, P. 1). So, if there are changes made to the policy and wages are increased studies show “that 2 na $15-per-hour minimum wage would reduce poverty among female health care workers by a smaller, but still substantive fraction, 27.1%.” (Himmelstein and Venkataramani, 2019, P.5).
First fact: According to the statistics by Leigh “Raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour would reduce poverty rates among female health care workers by 27.1% to 50.3%.” (Leigh, 2019, p.1). It shows that the minimum wage plays an important role in protecting the basic life of the vulnerable group. So, the existence of minimum wage is necessary.
Fact check: is it true that Raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour would reduce poverty rates among female health care workers by 27.1% to 50.3%? https://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.2105/AJPH.2018.304880 However when I looked deeper into the case it mentions that doesn’t mention that percentage instead it says $15-per-hour minimum wage would put economic pressure on markets outside health care to raise wages and would support political initiatives to raise economy-wide minimum wages.
Second Fact: “We show that hours of work are reduced proportionately more than employment when the minimum wage is increased” (Couch and Wittenburg, 2001, P.2).
Fact check: However, when trying to locate this information I was not granted access to the document.
Third Fact: “Different administrative areas under the central government may have different minimum wage standards.” (Minimum wage regulations, 2005, n.p)
Fact check: This fact is indeed true in the article it states this exact fact. In fact, it mentions that the minimum wage standard will be studied and formulated by the administrative department of labor security. http://www.gov.cn/banshi/2005-08/05/content_20677.htm
