In my unfiltered Google search, I found very little news about “wearing masks in public”, almost nothing. Most of the articles related to wearing masks are about experts studying the effects of wearing masks and the types of people who should wear masks and the places where they should be worn. Of course, there have been many articles advocating wearing masks.
In the current epidemic situation, the importance of wearing masks is self-evident, so there are a lot of articles like this. But as I said, there is very little true “journalism” in these articles, and much of it is advocacy or commentary masquerading as journalism. In fact, I can understand the writer’s mentality that wearing a mask is a means to prevent the infection of the virus, and the most important issue for everyone at present is the case of infection by the virus. So, obviously, the social network will cover more of the issues that people care about the most, and turn those into journalism. After all, how much journalism can there be about wearing masks?
However, when I limited my search to “only news” and used the directed search of news databases, I found that my thinking was too narrow before, and there was a lot of relevant news. It’s not just about health, it’s about economics, it’s about humanity, it’s about discrimination. As an example I saw on Chinese websites, the first batch of Chinese wearing masks was discriminated against by local people in supermarkets, airports, and other public places in the United States, and some even suffered violent attacks. There were also small groups protesting against wearing masks after a news story about violence at a football match in which many spectators refused to wear them.
After I limited my search, I found the real news, which had a five-w element of the event, supported by reliable digital surveys and expert discourse, and had a more structured, serious tone and higher quality than articles that actually advocated the effects of wearing masks in the name of news. These news articles, while not advocating the benefits of wearing masks, but show readers the importance of wearing masks in an epidemic situation with factual examples.
In order not to be blinded by masquerading news, it is important to narrow down the search. If you simply Google for the news you’re looking for, you’re likely to get buried in a lot of irrelevant content since the social network tends to promote products and ignore other features. For this reason, I hope you can be careful, patient, and attentive when looking for news.
