As a consumer of many media forms I do pay for certain types of entertainment. I have a monthly subscription to Spotify, PlayStation Plus, and a Netflix account. I choose to pay for these subscriptions because they are a big part of my day to day life. Not a day goes by where I do not listen to music, play video games, or watch a movie. These subscriptions are not a need that I have, rather something I choose to buy for my own entertainment. I have no issue paying for them because they are hobbies that I enjoy doing.
When it comes to media companies pushing to have me pay or register to read a story, often I do not partake in them. To me, the internet is so vast I can keep exploring through Google, Reddit, or through Twitter to find what I need without paying for it. Personally, I think it is kind of a rip-off to make someone pay for a single story. Someone else out on the internet probably did the same story that delivers the same message for free, which defeats the purpose of plugging in all of my information to read that story.
There is not much digital news could offer me to make the leap beyond the paywall. My life does not center around news nor do I have the time to invest money into paying for a subscription to read a plethora of stories at my disposal. Not that news does not apply to me, but I do not find pleasure in having all of that news because I generally would not pay attention to it.
Most of the time if I want to find a news story I do it under my own time. I go look for the story because it applies to me. I do not scroll through newspapers or digital news sites looking for something to read. Even if I stumble across a story while I am on Twitter and it requires me to register my email or pay a small fee I back out of that link. For one, someone could have a phony article trying to hack my information. Or, the story is not that important to me to have to sign up or have to pay for it.
Reading your words is like seeing myself. I also do not find much pleasure in the news. If I need to find a news article, I would definitely not choose to pay by monthly subscription. I’ll search for keywords using the search engines directly because, as you said, there must be others for free on the Internet delivering the same report. I can even search for huge international news on Chinese websites. The kinds of things I’m willing to pay for are movies, music, comics, etc
