What?: I got to learn a little bit more about nursing home administrators.
So What?: I interviewed a NHA, who I hope may be a potential reference or networking opportunity in the future.
Now What?:  I met a NHA without a nursing degree. This was hopeful for me, because many that I am aware of have nursing degrees. Obviously, I do not have one either.

  1. I think in society overall we have this notion nursing homes are places you go to die. It has to be really hard for that industry. I face this difficult talk with patient’s and families all the time at the hospital I work at. I think this could be a critical relationship. We oftentimes have the local nursing homes come to our hospital and distribute information (brochures, pictures, reviews, etc.). They’ve even offered us to tour the facility so we can firsthand see what it’s like. It seems like it could slip right in your 6th concept, stand alone system.

  2. Very nice post Katie!
It was a nice day to day overview of what a NHA does, I think that you could have asked Correne to elaborate more on how she makes sure things in the facility are running well, it would also be interesting to see how COVID19 affected those type of institutions.

  3. Hey Katie,
Your post caught my eye right away as I work in The Good Samaritan Society in Fort Collins Colorado. I’m sure Correne’s time was slightly short due to these times, but I also would’ve liked to see what her take was on this situation. The Good Samaritan Society merged a little over a year ago with Sanford Health and a lot of our policies and procedures have shifted (just as you mentioned in concept 5). We continue to get new procedure requirements from Sanford Health on top of The Good Samaritan and the state. This is kind of a mess for the SNF and Assisted Living facilities right now. Good Sam has so many working parts and it can be overwhelming to learn what all we have at times. Good job!
