Forsyth Library opened in 1967 and is the only library on the Fort Hays State University campus. It serves the student, faculty, and staff populations with its mission to be a university partner in delivering accessible, quality education and developing engaged global citizens and leaders. This $27.7M renovation project will transform the current building into an active, inspiring library that demonstrates the University’s commitment to students’ academic success.

Where Did the Funding Come From?

The majority of this $27.7M project is funded by $19M in federal NIST grants. The remaining funding will come from a combination of private gifts, Educational Building Funds, and State General Funds for Deferred Maintenance.

Why is the Renovation Needed?

For a number of years, the facility has needed upgrades to its basic infrastructure, such as HVAC and plumbing. Windows leak and let water into collections spaces and offices.

Materials housed in Forsyth Library’s Special Collections and University Archives are in dire need of better climate control. These items are selected for their rarity and the research value they offer to those studying the institution and surrounding western Kansas region. In many cases, materials are the only copy of their kind—such as a photograph or manuscript. These collections are currently unable to be kept at stable temperature, stable humidity, and are housed in spaces throughout Forsyth Library which are subject to rainwater intrusion from windows or potential flooding on the lower level of the building. In order to offer responsible stewardship of these materials, it is imperative to create an appropriate space where they may be kept safe from environmental dangers.

These challenges present us with an incredible opportunity to create the academic hub Fort Hays State University truly deserves. The upgraded facility will support students’ research and study needs–as well as provide spaces for collaboration and engaging academic events. Students and researchers today depend on easy access to electrical outlets and robust Wifi connections. Although enhanced over the years, a thorough renovation will allow FHSU to plan for greater capacity to truly meet these needs. Forsyth Library is also thrilled to support partners in our space that will include the Makerspace, Institute for New Media Studies, Writing Center, and Honors College.
