  • Define descriptive and inferential statistics. What is the distinction between the two (provide examples of both)?
    • Numbers that are used to summarize and describe data
      • Doing research on what fast food people prefer, and using percent’s and pie charts
    • Statistics from a random sample of data taken from a population to describe and make inferences about the population
      • Doing research in Hays and taking note of the participants careers
    • Define populations and samples. What is the distinction between the two (provide examples of both)?
      • Population is an entire group, the larger set
        • FHSU is the population
      • Samples is the small subset of a larger set of data
        • The sample from FHSU would be students majoring in HHP
      • Define an independent and dependent variable. What is the distinction between the two (provide examples of both)?
        • independent variable is when a variable is manipulated by an experimenter
          • in a research where they are testing how exercise affects sleeping habits, the independent would be the amount of exercise done
        • dependent is measured and represents the outcome of the research
          • the dependent variable would be hours of sleep
        • What is the distinction between a discrete and a continuous variable (provide examples of both)?
          • Discrete is a number
            • Number, of people in a hospital or hospital
          • Continuous is time
            • Time, time taken to answer a question
          • What are the different levels of measurement? Provide examples of the different levels.
            • Nominal, like gender
            • Ordinal, being satisfied, very satisfied, or not satisfied
            • Interval, like Fahrenheit
            • Ratio, like temperature measurements in Kelvin
          • What is DSRP?
            • Distinctions
            • Systems
            • Relationships
            • Perspectives
            • Method of teaching, learning and thinking made by systems theorists and cognitive scientists
          • How is “Test” defined?
            • Any instrument used for measuring
          • How is “Measurement” defined?
            • Length or size of something
