TB Screening

Although not an immunization, tuberculosis screening is often included with immunization information.

The CDC recommends that people should be tested for TB is they:

  • have spent time with a person known or suspected to have active TB disease; or
  • have HIV infection or another condition that weakens the immune system and puts them at high risk for active TB disease; or
  • have symptoms of active TB disease; or
  • are from a country where active TB disease is very common (most countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Russia); or
  • live somewhere in the United States where active TB disease is more common such as a homeless shelter, migrant farm camp, prison or jail, or some nursing homes); or
  • inject illegal drugs.

Recommended test is Mantoux

  • Contains 5 tuberculin units of purified protein derivative (PPD)
  • Administered intradermally
  • Should be read 48-72 hours after placement

HIV-positive children

  • Annual skin test

Incarcerated youth

  • Skin test 2-3 years

Children exposed to high risk people

  • Skin test at 4 to 6 years and 11 to 16 years
    If administering test at the same time as MMR vaccine, do both at the same time or wait to do the PPD 4-6 weeks post MMR vaccine
