Puberty may begin around 9-10 years of age. Breast budding may start as early as 8 years old while others may not begin until 13 years; the average age is 10 years. Any puberty before 8 years in girls or 9 years in boys should be evaluated for precocious puberty. The first sign of puberty in boys is enlargement of testes, thinning and reddening of the scrotum. This usually occurs at age 11 but can occur between 9 and 14 years.
