Background Information
Active Immunizations
- A person’s immunologic defenses are stimulated which can occur by exposing a person to a live pathogen, getting the disease, and becoming immune as a result of the primary immune response.
- Artificially acquired active immunity can be induced by a vaccine or a substance which contains the infectious agent which may be:
- Live (attenuated) or
- Killed (inactivated)
Passive Immunizations
- Human or animal antibody once formed is removed from the host and transferred to a recipient to provide immediate passive immunity.
- Antibodies pass from mother to infant (can last up to 6 months).
- Antibodies pass from mother to infant via breast milk.
