The middle childhood or school-age child is from 5 years to 10 – 12 years old. Bright Futures considers middle childhood to be 5 to 10 years of age, so we will use that definition. Much of the well care for this age group is similar to the preschooler. The children in this age group are becoming more and more independent yet still rely on their parents.

The first priority is to listen to the concerns of the parents. Always observe the parent-child interaction during the entire visit. Reinforce positive interactions and discuss any concerns. If there are siblings in the room, how do they interact with the child? Is the parent positive about the child?
