Erik Erikson

Erik Erikson PhotoThe best known theorist of psychosocial development. Like Sigmund Freud, Erikson believed personality developed in stages. The stages he identified are:

  • Trust vs. Mistrust: Infancy
  • Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt: Toddler
  • Initiative vs. Guilt: Preschool
  • Industry vs. Inferiority: School-aged
  • Identity vs. Role confusion: Adolescence

Erikson also developed stages for the young, middle, and older adult years as well. For an overview of all eight stages of development watch the video below.
