- What is the value of specialty certification to your professional practice?
I will be obtaining my ACLS next month for my current position working in the GI lab. This is important for my own professional practice because my job now is providing patient care pre and post op as well as care during procedures with sedation and anesthesia. We not only do procedures on patients that are healthy we also perform them on patients in the hospital that have several different co morbidities. This enhances the risk for “something to go wrong” and I would need to be a part of a code. I need to know what to do in order to effectively help with that. It is also extremely important for me to know and understand different heart rhythms.
- What is the value of specialty certification to the nursing profession as a whole?
I think it is extremely important for all nurses to never get complacent within their practice. This means they need to keep their minds learning. In an ever changing field like nursing, it is important to keep up with those changes. Otherwise, you may become obsolete as a nurse in a short time. Getting those certifications, CEU’s, furthering education, etc… can all be beneficial to a nurse staying current and providing the best possible care to their patients.

I enjoyed reading your post about nursing certifications. Congrats on achieving your ACLS! Your patients will be thankful that you have gotten this education. You are right- nursing is an ever changing field! I like how you mentioned that nurses should not become complacent. What an easy thing to do! Nursing certification gives us the power of education (Montgomery, 2017).

Congratulations in advance for ACLS!! I just recently got my ACLS(still getting used to the rhythms) but I think nurses feel that earning a certification fulfills both their professional and personal goals.Earning a credential in a specialty offers a nurse a professional challenge.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support is a very important and useful certification for any nurse I believe. Our scope of practice stretches into the medication administration portion of ACLS. Nurses should possess knowledge of this part of resuscitation. The research shows that ACLS trained personnel have better patient outcomes. One study showed that return of spontaneous circulation increased around 10% after the number of ACLS trained nurses increased. Codes are an unfortunate aspect of working in healthcare and as nurses we must be ready to take on certain tasks during codes. Congratulations on receiving your certification and good luck in the future.
