Burnout is the state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion. Many factors contribute to burnout and how it negatively effects care and increases healthcare cost. Leadership is a big factor and a critical component in reducing burnout. Good leadership can influence actions and behaviors to reduce burnout by working together to achieve common goals.

Every day we see and hear of more nurses with burnout; nursing is one of the top industry where burnout occurs more frequently. They are various mechanism suggested to handle the situations. Holli Blazey, Nursing Program Coordinator for Employee Wellness at Cleveland Clinic suggest 9 steps in coping with the situation. She also mention about taking care of oneself first, even though it may sound selfish I have always said that I come first, because if I do not take care of myself I would not be able to take care of someone else.

The last step she mentioned is to practice gratitude, I find this very important; especially when we complaint and then you see patients with disabilities, sufferings, and others fighting for their life.

I also did my nursing ppt. on nurse burnout. The growing acceptance of burnout in the nursing industry has led to the development of numerous retreats and camps designed specifically for healthcare professionals. I think raising awareness would be a good idea to show hospitals that something needs to be done to it and that a healthy nurse is what saves them money and ensures that high-quality care is given to patients. It can also make a nurse leave bedside nursing and discover the many alternatives that exist in the nursing field. Burnout is bad because it can affect the whole entire healthcare system since patient care is reduced as a result. Great presentation.
