    Hi:

While operating rooms use different checklist tools to ensure safety; a more recent introduction to legislation in Wisconsin was introduce to mandate the use of cameras during procedure. Action took place after the death of a woman who was given too much of anesthesia during a breast enhancement surgery.
Many questions arises if cameras should be approved. While some argue how this will affect HIPAA compliance, others state that one of the benefits would be that it can be used as a tool to prevent future mistakes. Of course there are many other questions in consideration before a decision be made, would like to hear opinions.

Justin, I found your ppt to be very interesting and informative, especially since I don’t have any experience in the OR. Your ppt clearly outlined the necessity for clear communication. In fact, Plaxton, H. (2017), discusses how distractions such as music, small talk, and educating colleagues can take reduce the safety of the operating room and impair vital communication and alarms that are necessary for safe care. Subsequently, these distractions can contribute to poor suturing and increase the chance of infection in the operating room. However, strategies such as educating staff on how to reduce distractions such as opening and closing of door during procedures by placing “Do Not Enter” signs on the door, limiting the use of electronic devices, and limiting conversation to relevant conversation material will all help to minimize distractions and reduce the possibility of increasing infections, especially during wound closure.

Communication is especially vital in the OR due to procedures depending on corrdinated efforts in real time. I have seen examples of how poor communication can directly result in poor patient outcomes. A very well known example of communication and team work breaking down and resulting in patient death is a case where an elective procedure went wrong. After induction anesthesia could not secure an air way and the patient was not being properly oxygenated. During this time the nurse recognized the need for an emergent airway and brought the supplies in but anesthesia did not heed the advice. The patient suffered hypoxic brain injury and ultimately died leaving behind her husband and family. The husband has been educating healthcare workers on the importance of communication using this story to outline the importance of it (Davis, 2017).
