I think Vocera’s are great! My organization uses it in the surgical areas of the hospital but hopefully soon, all units will be using them! Such a more effective way to communicate and its hands free! Great presentation!

I was a patient in a hospital that uses vocera. I can see the good and the bad. The good is great, it’s hands free so if someone needs to communicate with me while I’m cleaning a patient or putting in a foley they can, BUT it’s a potential vector in distraction. Sometimes as nurses we need to concentrate, especially during sterile procedures. Sometimes we need to have a serious conversation with our patients and don’t want to be interrupted. Sometimes we are rounding with physicians and they really really hate it when our phone rings. Sometimes I just don’t want ANOTHER barrier between me and the patient. I may be old fashioned (because I’m kinda old) I still did paper charting until 2009. Maybe it’s my personal aversion to talking on the phone, I don’t know. That’s why I work nights. Fewer calls, fewer demands, fewer interruptions, only when it’s really important. Everyone and their dog wants your attention, lets focus on processes that can reduce the amount of noise and distraction. What could the future be? Several companies are developing smart glasses. Voice recognition is getting more advanced. What if we could text one another and dictate our assessments into the medical record? What if the nurse’s station was in our pocket? Good presentation, it reinforced the importance of good communication and got me thinking about the future.

    Hi,
I enjoyed your powerpoint and agree that communication is vital in healthcare. One of my doctors actually my dentist uses text messages for appointment reminders. I find this very helpful as it often times seems easier to answer a text than a phone call. I have noticed that most of the medical doctors that I and my family use have patient portals with such information as lab and test results. I also find this easier than calling the office.
