- )What Isis the value of specialty certification to your professional practice?
According with MSN, certification benefits the individual, the profession, and the public through: • Promotion of quality patient care • Evaluation of the standards of medical-surgical nursing practice • Documentation of this specialized knowledge base • Peer recognition • Increased self- esteem and supports certification as a commitment to safe, evidence-based, holistic care which results in desired patient outcomes. AMSN agrees that the certification credential should reflect the nursing specialty in which the nurse is certified. ABSNC believes that the increasingly complex patient/client needs within the current healthcare delivery system, are best met when registered nurses, certified in specialty practice, provide nursing care. DEFINITION: Certification: the formal recognition of the specialized knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrated by the achievement of standards identified by a nursing specialty to promote optimal health outcomes (ABNS, 2006) Nursing Science: in nursing, the resulted knowledge obtained through rigorous testing of empirical theories and models (Chinn & Kramer, 2011)
I am currently A Certified Med Surgical Nurse and most of the in the hospital where I work are certified. It certainly make us proud.
2) What is the value of specialty certification to the nursing profession as a whole?
Research concerning specialty nursing certification clearly demonstrated both tangible and intangible benefits of certification. Certification validates a nurse’s qualifications and advanced competence, and demonstrates his or her professional aspirations to improve the quality of patient care and delivery of services (Eisemon & Cline, 2006)
Another benefit of certification is its effect on recruitment and retention of nurses, as well as increased interest in obtaining Magnet designation through the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program. According to Shirey (2005), promoting nursing certification is consistent with achieving high professional standards.

Congratulations on your certification. The is great that most of your unit holds the Med-Surg certification. I don’t believe that most of our facility would hold certifications if they weren’t required to have it for our trauma designation.
Thank you, I think that is related to the fact that we are Magnet hospital.
