Certification

Specialty certifications in nursing are important. As nurses, the best thing we can do for our patients is be educated and up to date on what the best practices are. Obtaining a specialty certification is one way that we show that we are committed to being the best in our respective fields. It also creates a more competitive resume as it shows prospective employees that you have a commitment to excellence.
I currently work on an orthopedic unit and plan on obtaining my certification once I have hit two years on the unit, as that it what is required to take the examination for certification. I’ve currently being working in this field for one year. This past year I attended the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Conference and was amazed at much there is to learn about my field of study and how many of the nurses in attendance were already certified as orthopedic nurses.
I do not plan on remaining in orthopedics for the duration of my career, but I do believe in giving my all for whatever I work in at any given time. This is why I’m looking forward to taking the orthopedic nurse examination. In the future I would like to work in a more critical care setting and would like to obtain my CCRN. As of right now I’m just developing my nursing skills and creating a strong foundation with my critical thinking skills.

I agree with you that obtaining a nursing certification is important. It shows that you have the experience in the specialty as well as the knowledge. Co workers look to you as an expert in the field and ask for recommendations. Good luck to you with getting certified.
