I would like to acquire the Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification which is sponsored by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). I started studying for the CCRN certification exam right before I found out I was pregnant with my first child about 6 years ago. Life happened, and I never did take that exam. I left the ICU about 4 years ago and I have been working in the Pulmonary Clinic with chronic lung disease patients.
Having a CCRN certification is still one of my professional goals even though I am not currently working in the ICU. I do see myself working in the ICU again once my kids are older. Having my CCRN would be valuable to my professional practice because it would give me recognition, possible career advancement, professional pride, and a sense of accomplishment. It would allow me to set an example for other nurses in the clinic.
What is the value of CCRN certification to the nursing profession as a whole? It contributes to better outcomes of acutely and critically ill patients. Patients and family members know they are getting the best of care from their certified nurse. The increased knowledge and skill of the certified RN will increase competence in the area of specialty making them a good resource person for fellow nurses. Having this certification as a nurse makes he or she an expert in their specialty, creating a standard of excellence.

Yes specialty certification definitely helps to set a standard of excellence. I am glad you mentioned that getting certified also helps the unit out because you can be a resource for others with clinical decision making. That is why I think more hospitals should recognize and encourage certification. I hope you are able to obtain your certification!
Absolutely! I think more hospitals should push for certifications and offer incentives. My organization is in the middle of obtaining MAGNET status, so they are pushing for higher degrees of education as well as specialty certification. However, there isn’t much incentive to do it. I feel that if there was a pay raise or exam fee reimbursement, then more nurses would be willing to certify quicker.
That’s awesome Beth! One of the special certifications I want to obtain within this year is my CCRN! I will make it my short-term goal for myself. Aside from possibly getting paid more, obtaining these extra certifications give sense of self-fullfilment and achievements, compentence in workplace, and career growth. I believe that there’s always room for learning and improving yourself, especially if you want to excell in the career you’ve chosen.
Yes! I am always looking for avenues to grow in my career. Once I graduate and things settle down a bit, I will begin studying for the CCRN. One thing at a time, right? That’s great that you want to obtain your CCRN as well. It will give a sense of self-fulfillment and achievement. Good luck!
