Nursing Specialty Certification

The Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) is the specialty nursing certification for emergency nurses. This certification validates the nurses as meeting high standards of competency, knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment. If a patient is aware that the nurse has a specialty certification, he/she feels more confident trusting their care to that nurse. Re certification is one way for nurses to keep up to date with the ever changing health care system. Many hospitals encourage and support nurses in getting certified, one of the incentives include better pay. My hospital reimburse you the fee once you pass the test. I have had in mind getting certified for a while now, but never got to it, my plan is to get it done once I finish my BSN classes.

The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) published a research conducted by the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO) dated late 2016 early 2017 . The study shows that CEN certified nurses perform patients care more accurately, are more efficient and effective technically, promote safety, remain current with new changes and development, and demonstrate higher ethical behavior than non certified nurses. Obtaining CEN certification not only benefits the nurse, but also the patients, families, and employers.

That’s great that your organization not only encourages you to get certified but has incentives! My organization is always pushing for certifications and higher levels of education but quite frankly, there isn’t much incentive. They do not offer a pay raise for certification or reimbursement for exam fees.

Absolutely! Certification is a personal goal of fine and will benefit my growth and knowledge. I feel that someone should get certified because they are passionate about their specialty and truly want to excel in it! An incentive is just an added bonus.
