I work in a pediatric hospital, which offers Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) credentialing. I have trained but have not yet taken the test to become certified. A CPN is of value to me. A CPN will help me fulfill my professional goals as well as a personal goal. I want to be the best nurse I can for my patients. Gaining skills and credentials allows me to improve and makes me more credible member of the health care team.
The American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) represents nearly half a million nurses. The ABNS is a non-profit organization founded in 1991. Their mission is to promote specialty nursing certification to all stake-holders. ABNS activities and initiatives are designed to achieve the organization’s vision. Specialty nursing certification is the standard by which the public recognizes quality nursing care (The American Board of Nursing Specialties, 2005). Employers pursue nurses that hold specialty certification. Continuing to maintain such certifications demonstrates dedication to the profession. When patient care is complex specialty nurse care is optimal.

Out of curiosity, what is holding you back from taking the test? Thank you for the information, I did not know about the ABNS.
I just haven’t had time with school and work. They only offer it a few times a year.
I completely understand that. I’m sure you will do well when you are ready.
How much does the certification cost and will your work pay for it. Also if you get the certification will you get more money?
