Leadership in nursing according to American Nurse Today includes nine key principles. These principles include commitment to excellence, measurement of the important things, building a culture around service, create and develop leaders, focus on employee satisfaction, build individual accountability, align behaviors with goals and values, communicate on all levels, and recognize and reward success.
My personal leadership style is to focus on a few of these principles at a time until they are up to par and then add additional principles. The principles that I’m focusing on now as I’m beginning my career are commitment to excellence, communicate on all levels, and recognize and reward success. I believe in trying to be the best nurse I can be for my patients. I also strive to communicate with not only my patients, but my coworkers. Communication allows for seamless teamwork and limit swiss cheese nursing. Recognizing and rewarding success promotes a positive work environment for other employees and a healing environment for patients. I’m hoping that after I obtain my bachelors degree I begin to create and develop leaders as I begin precepting new hire nurses.
