I worked in pediatric ER for 4 years from 2010-2014 and one of the certifications that I wish I would have gotten is Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN). This license means that you would specialize and understand the particular health issues that affect children and adolescents. I loved working with children and their parents. Education was a big thing in the pediatric world. Dealing with minor things such as runny nose, fever ,diarrhea to major things such as cancer, abuse and autoimmune diseases made it challenging. I ended up getting away from the pediatric world and ending up in the cath lab, but hope to one day make my way back to the pediatric world to pursue my dreams.

A CPN would be a great job! I have never heard of it so I am sure there is a shortage. What additional training would this require and where can you get it?
Working in a pediatric ED for four years sounds exciting, challenging and scary at the same time. But, it sounds like that is your passion. I believe it’s important to work where your passion is. Going the extra step and becoming a Certified pediatric nurse, is a great achievement in this field. Is this something that your employer would recognize in your wages? Either way becoming certified in my opinion is a personal goal to advance my expertise in my field. Good luck and I hope you find your way back to what you love!
