1. What is the value of specialty certification to your professional practice?
A specialty certification is a validation to yourself and to patients, employers and coworkers that you have put in your time and have validated your understanding of the specialty you are practicing. Nurse Andrew states that certification is “a boost of confidence” (Nursing, 2011). I think many certified nurses feel this way and feel that the confidence alone is a good reason to go forward with obtaining a certification. Other reasons are that it makes you more marketable in the hiring process and it helps patients and coworkers feel even more confident in you and your abilities.
2. What is the value of specialty certification to the nursing profession as a whole?
Nursing certification is valuable to the nursing profession to assist in validating the nurses understanding making them more credible and reliable in their assessments, nursing diagnoses, education and recommendations. By strengthening a single nurse’s credibility and understanding, we strengthen the respect of the profession as a whole. Showing dedication to continuing education and validating ones understanding of an area is beneficial to the profession.

I like that you added about the hiring process. I did not think of that, but yes, a certification will definitely make you more marketable. It is also a way to keep up with the changing healthcare practices.
