I found that it was enlightening to read that nursing leadership is not just having a management role, but rather playing a role as a true leader. In fact, it brings attention to some of my upper management holders, and I realize that some have minimal characteristics of a leader. I think it is wise for most of us to understand we likely are being leaders now in our current roles rather we are working as floor nurses or providing care in clinics. If we are doing what we were trained to do and teaching others from the way we act, listen, and provide care, we are already leaders.
I lacked leadership confidence until I had more experience as a nurse. Within the last five years of my nursing career, my assurance in what I do as a nurse in providing patient care, has allowed me to expel my leadership qualities. I want to be a leader and an efficient one at that. Having this want is what encouraged me to go back to school to get my BSN. I want to learn more on how to be a leader, a leader with positive results. Getting my BSN will also allow me to be in a management position where I can better expose leadership qualities. It’s not about the title, but it is about the opportunity to have influence of getting the best quality patient care. I think behavior has a multitude of effect when it comes from getting respect from coworkers and patients. It’s essential to relate to employees and appreciate efforts. Patient care is provided by teamwork, not a one man operation. Leadership is working with others and helping to provide the path for them, working together.
