Leadership in Nursing

Leadership, in any profession, is a way of inspiring others to become motivated to move forward in their professional life.  Not only does this take a good, strong leader but also requires business associates that are open to positive changes.  I do not believe that my view of this has changed after watching the videos.  It has always been very important to help others grow as I grow in life.

There are lots of behaviors that I have observed in my lifetime from leaders that were not so good to leaders that were amazing.  From the leaders that were not positive leaders I learned what not to do and why.  From the leaders that were amazing I wanted to mimic their actions to become more like them.  To be a good leader I have found that you have to lead by example, listen to both sides, and always be positive, never talking negatively about a situation or a person.

I have found that others tend to migrate towards others that are positive.  To also be a good leader you have to surround yourself with others that have the same goals.  Have high expectations of you and hold others to the same higher standards.  Show them that you are willing to be just as accountable as you are expecting them to be.

The last thing that I have found to be an effective leader is to continue with personal growth.  Continue to read and then have those same books out for others to read.  Encourage group and independent growth through reading, activities, and interactions with others.  This is how I believe that anyone that wants to be a better leader can change their current level of thinking and actions to be a better leader.

A good leader does inspire others to become motivated but there are several other characterizes of a good leader. In my opinion communication skills are important. Leaders have many roles as an advocate, team member, mentor, educator and professional. For a leader to be effective they need good communication skills in these roles.
